Freedom is fine, as long as it has direction.

Street kids in Rio de Janeiro spend their whole youth doing drugs, spending their days at the beach, having frequent, unprotected sex, and going to raves. Many are illiterate, or close to it. Obviously, total freedom without guidance is not productive, nor desirable.

The youth today need something to strive for, something to believe in. Laying on the couch all day playing their Game Boy and surfing the net is not any way to spend your youth.

There is a book called "The Bridge". It recounts how brave and patriotic young boys in Nazi Germany defended Berlin to the death. I am not in any way defending the Nazis. I am complimenting the determination and unbelievable courage of these young boys who did not want the Communists to take over their country.

Read this quote below, taken from the website I've cited:

"Hitler Youth boys, along with old men, were hastily trained, ill-equipped and not terribly well led were the major recruits for the Volkssturm in the closing months of the year. The HJ boys, however, went into battle with a fervor even beyond that of the Waffen SS. Many accounts exist of battle hardeneded Wehrmacht and and SS troops who met these boy soldiers on the way to battle. Their advise was almost often "Its over. Go home!"

"The boys, however, armed with a few anti-tank weapons like Panzerfauts and perhaps a machinegun if one could be found, these Hitler Youth schoolboys went into battle. Often they performed amazingly well, even when given hopeless assignments. A book and movie addressing this is The Bridge. Many HJ boys, of course, did not survive. For many, their commiment to Hitler was absolute, even in the boys involved in the hopeless defense of Berlin (April-May 1945)."

Can you imagine if that same fervor were put to a productive use? We should re-institute Civics class in schools, and require that all High School students spend some time in community service.

Yes, why do you think all these gangs exist, teenagers are killing each other, girls are getting pegnant, graffiti is plastered through cities, big and small, kids don't listen to parents anymore, drop out of school, and yet still want a skateboard that mommy and daddy will buy for them.

Well, we are having just enough freedom in Malaysia. Freedom is a two-way, respect thing. Freedom should be given in doses, not given in one lump sum. If one did not have freedom before, and suddenly gets freedom, he will abuse that freedom given to him.
