Certainly. I did my thesis on that topic. Look up the history of domestic violence when it was still legal - specifically, the rule of thumb ( can beat your wife and kids with a stick no bigger around than your thumb), when and how the laws changed, current stats, laws in your own state.
Do a chronology for half of it, discuss the social impact of the current laws - and don't forget to include that women start domestic violenece as well (men don't always report it) as well as teenagers - the victims can be husband, wife, parent and even the elderly. elderly abuse has taken a major rise.
Good luck - I think if you make an outline of the things I mentioned - and your own ideas - you can easily come up with 2500 words. Likely more. I ended up with 60 pages worth! LOL

A good all round book on domestic violence if you haven't got it already is "Domestic Violence: A Global View", Summers, R. W. and Hoffman, A. M.
Another one is "Heavy Hands: An Introduction to the Crimes of Family Violence" Gosselin, D. K.

It occurs fifty fifty between the sexes. Don't buy into the feminist propaganda. That is why research is always biased in this area, because they are pursuing an agenda. Also, a nagging individual, over time, can drive you demented, I have observed it many times. If someone snaps, the other party deserves what they get.

Theories to look at may be feminism (and the crisis in masculinity), power and control. Perhaps post modernity can be used as explanation. Also social constructivist theory. I would prob include all of above but it depends for what subject the essay is for

You might want to devote a paragragh to the cycle of violence, i.e., "What happens to abused and neglected children after they grow up? Do the victims of violence and neglect later become criminals or violent offenders themselves?"

men do it more than women. women are more likely to use a weapon. children may or may not be involved. Concern over it is probably not all that modern though we tend to look back with the usual 'things were much worse then scope'.
