What type of surgeons are the interns on Grey's Anatomy. Obviously they are not specialized, so what exactly is their career called?

They are still doctors/surgeons, but because they have not chosen a specialty yet, they are going through a LOT of training as interns to help them decide what they eventually want to specialize in.

I think they're still interns learning various types of surgery fields before they are residents.
I think Yang is leaning toward cardio-thoracic (like Burke).
It was thought that Alex wanted to be in plastics (with Sloane) until Sloane started treating him horribly. Then he started getting into obstetrics with Addison. (As Sloane subtly said a few episodes ago.."Where everything is soft, pink and squishy").
I don't think that Meredith is close to choosing. Izzy, I thought wanted to do cardio surgeries, but after Denny, it's anyone's guess. I don't think George has decided yet either. I'm thinking that he doesn't want to work with bones like Callie. (The exact term escapes me).
All in all, their residents. Nothing claimed, nothing decided. Yet.

They get to learn all kinds of surgeries so they can choose a field.
They are considered first year interns
