Underrated, well i'm assuming you mean not popular, not many smart people around these digital corners. I would say Jazz for sure. Rooted in blues, it's a wonderful genre of music with many steps taken since the days of Coltrane. I'm like jazz a lot more than blues. A blues just means a song in a 12 bar form. Four bars of the 1 chord, two bars of the 5, two bars of 1, one of 4, one of 5, and two of 1.There's really only so much you can do with that. Glitch-hop is also underrated, but no one on here would understand what I'm saying, or know any of the bands I'm talking about. I would say Emo and Country are overrated, just because they are the "cool" genres to listen to these days. Country is simply music for the simple man. Most songs are just stories and usually use the same guitar progressions. Emo pretty much the same thing, but subtract simple and insert whiny. Emo has been dead for almost 10 years, and country I don't know well enough to argue. I wouldn't say rap because it's for the money, and that's what the movement is all about, so it can't be overrated. Pop music in general is going in that direction, and in all tentacle-genres of the pop consortium. Listen to Devendra Banhart.

Underrated... British and Australian hip-hop... I'm not really a hip-hop fan, however I do think Brit and Aussie hip-hop is a whole lot better than its American equivalent. It's very ol' school.

Overrated... this new-wave post-punk emo trash that clogs the airwaves. The bands all sound the same (well most do) and offer nothing progressive in music.

Aerosmith - Rock In a not uncomplicated position that's continuously missed, even by technique of the band, because Joe Perry and Brad Whitford (the guitarists) had both left Aerosmith at this element, and this album became made with 2 different guitarists, Rick Dufay and Jimmy Crespo. It has the most funky, foot tapping bluesy songs on it and, even nonetheless you are able to tell they were doped as a lot as their eyeballs, that's surely a ideal album. because the unique line up of the band reformed, that album has especially a lot been left out. that's unhappy cos it really is a really cool album.

Emo music is definitely underrated --- people think only depressed people who cut their wrists listen to it. Many of my favorite bands are considered emo, and I really like that type of music.

Rap and hip-hop are overrated. : P

Emo music, definately. It has gotten a bad rap that only wrist-cutting, self-hating, depressed kids listen to it. I know some people that you only have to say the word "emo" around and they flip out, saying that they cut and are depressed and the guys are all gay and nonsense like that.

Overrated...rap. Or hip-hop. It seems like everyone and their uncle are trying to be a rapper nowadays, and most of them aren't even that good. I like the old-school rap, though. Like NWA...if any of you even know who they are....=)

I wish people paid more attention to jazz.
The musicianship far surpasses that in any other genre.
In fact, I think it's sad that we don't seem to have room in popular culture for music that doesn't have lyrics. People are missing so much by closing themselves off to the broad range of music that is out there.

OK, you asked the question & here is my answer.
Underrated: I agree with stratplayer. Blues, because of it's influence on modern music, whether people realize it or not. Country, in my opinion, is also underrated & often misunderstood & despised. Country music is about ordinary people & real life.
Overrated: Rap, because it's not even real singing, just talking in rhythm.
