1. There's a definition problem from the outset. The term "East Indian" has various different local definitions, including:
a) people from the Indian sub-continent resident in North America (to differentiate from indigenous people);
b) people from the Indian sub-continent resident in the Caribbean, mainly Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana (to differentiate from Afro-origin West Indians).
