online games, specifically MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs), are very addictive.

your son is nine. i'm willing to bet that as soon as he gets home from school (or perhaps after homework) he gets right on the cpu. soon as dinner is over, he goes to the computer. doesn't want to visit family, or go to the store, or whatever, because he is playing.

i played an online game from 1997 to 2004. minimum 9 hours a day. even while working two jobs, and going to school. (obviously, that doesn't leave much room for sleep). i have nothing to show for it, except that i type rather fast. however, i'm not used to capitalizing things, as you can see.

one of the above answerers said that he was 12 and didn't understand much of the game, but he's 15 now, and displays his character level. that kid spent 3 years, and has some text to show for all that.

i personally think it's a bad idea, since it's hard to monitor what he does on there, and because it's basically wasting his time.

I think you should be at least eleven or twelve years old to play an MMORPG like Runescape or Maple Story. There are a lot of strange people on those games and unless you really think your kid is smart enough to know what to do and what not to do during these situations, I guess you could let him. But I'm warning you, if your kid is already playing this often, it may be hard because Runescape can get VERY ADDICTIVE. For example, I played for a couple months but THANK GOD I STOPPED. It's very easy to get obsessed with Runescape so if you're going to stop him/her, act now while you still can! However even if you decide to let him play, you still should enforce a few rules or at least teach him a little lesson on talking with strangers on the internet. Personally, I don't see why people would WANT to pay for membership and the game is just a little more limited if you end membership, so I think you might want to consider ending membership fee (because you can have a free account), but that isn't very serious.

If I were you, I would get on the computer and check out the game for yourself (just research what it's about), then you can make an informed decision as to whether you think it's appropriate for your child. Everyone's different. As for you paying $5 a month, I would have your son do some chores around the house to earn it and make sure his homework and physical activities are not being neglected. Kids need exercise and fresh air. Interactive computer games tend to take up alot of time so take that into account.

international of Warcraft has a Disable Chat characteristic. it is also quite playable getting to point 80 without anybody else, through basically doing quests. WoW is amazingly versatile, it even includes a Parental Controls area that lets you make certain how lengthy you want him to play and many, many different useful aspects. regardless of in case you probably did not disable the chat completely, you are able to block out undesirable words with a click of a button. desire this helps...in case you want more beneficial documents about some thing touching on to WoW basically lemme understand.

While there is the occasional bad language most of runescape is a safe and good game for a kid that age. It is hard tho for them and he may get frustrated with quests.

It depends on his maturity. If he knows not to give information out to strangers and you are ok with a few people on the game swearing than it is a fun game that he can play.

I wouldn't let him. He might start talking to strangers, and revealing a lot of information. If he knows good enough that he shouldn't talk to other players, and reveal personal info, if not Tell him. Then maybe he'll be mature, or responsible enough to play.

Runescaoe has a really good filtering system
if you saying phone numbers addresses or things that are close to being a bad word it is replaced with asterisks

The game itself may be challenging to him though

Its an online game, so you can have your share of weird people on there, if you think your child is smart enough not to talk to weird people (and there could be pedophiles and perverts talking to him) then hes safe
