I have to do an essay for engilsh using and analogy. I need something that i can write 2-4 paragraphs. We're not supposed to use cliche ones though (ie: a mind is like a parachute:it only works when it's open, life is like a box of chocolates, etc.) if anyone can think of one that isn't SO popular and cliche that would be sooooo good. i was trying to change around the parachute one...but i need to think of another thing that only works when it opens so as to complete the sentence: a mind is like a _______ it only works when it's open. HELP!

A mind is like a laptop, it only works when it's open.
This works on more than one level. Like a mind, a laptop won't easily accept new information when it's closed, but it can when it's open (you can type the information in).

A mind is like the monitor of my computer. All the "thought" and magic is displayed there.
The computer, of course, is the brain. While a digital computer is made of circuit boards, the human computer is made of brain cells called neurons, and the cells are all connected in millions of neural pathways (circuits) that do information processing. We all have the same basic computer hardware, but some of us have different brands of components.
Our mental abilities (intelligence) is the software and the perceptions, images and facts processed by our brains is the data. Garbage in, garbage out. So what we do with our human computers is up to us...what we learn thoughout our lives.
Well, there's your analogy...you should be able to make 2-4 paragraphs from that. Good luck!
