Yep, you can't play it on a non-ipod. They use an mp4 format which is proprietary.
The only way I've figured out how to do it is to use iTunes to burn a CD with the music you've bought.
Then use Windows media player to rip the CD back into an mp3 file and transfer that to your mp3 player.
Pain in the butt but it works.

Here's an answer that just doesn't bash iTunes and will actually solve your problem. There is a program called TuneBite which can scan your entire computer for copy-protected songs (i.e. the songs you downloaded off iTunes), or also allows you to simply add certain songs you choose yourself. It will then convert the song(s) into a high quality UNprotected format of your choice (MP3, OGG, etc) which you can then transfer to any device or computer you'd like. See below for a link to the program.

I say this to everyone: think of the "i" in itunes and think of the "i" in ipod. ***ITUNES ONLY WORKS WITH IPODS***
Windows Media Player, Real Player, and I think Quicktime will sync MP3 players. Buy songs off one of these and copy it.
Good Luck

Hey welcome to DRM.
and your the paying customer.
Why not have an hour or two of hair pulling searching for customer back up, help pages, pay for customer help phone numbers, and so on.
About 2 hours should, if you jump through hoops, and give tons of personal/bank info, get it sorted.
And this is technology?
Buy it from a shop, or kick the a holes into touch by illegally downloading it.
Its actually easier, and more reliable.
