I dont remember which character picked on the girl....but I seem to recall that she was rather offended that he thought his picking on her screwed up her life. She was married with kids of her own I think....her life turned out fine in spite of him. I think she offered him forgiveness because she thought he needed it for closure.

It was a boy he picked on. He let the boy "kill him back" to gain his forgiveness.
Or do you mean Kevin Bacon's character who teased the girl?
