I found out my computer is a Socket A (462). I was told by the manufacturer of my computer (Hp/Compaq) that A motherboards are compatible with Processors up to Athlon 64. I am unable to find many motherboards for Socket A to begin with, let alone ones that say they are compatible with Athlon 64. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I currently have a A7VBX-LA Motherboard, Athlon Xp 3000+ 2.17ghz processor, and 1 GB of Ram. I do seek to play the game medieval 2 total war (Im upgrading the graphics card as soon as i upgrade the processor and motherboard).

So what would I have to do to use athlon 64? I'm seeking to upgrade to it from XP which seems outdated.

they lied. Athlon and Athlon 64 are not the same. socket A is obselete and you will have to pay a premium for a new mobo at this point.

i suggest when you do upgrade, consider even budget motherboards for athlon 64 cpu (i got mine for $75) have built in graphics much better than what you are likely using now. look for a motherboard with geforce 6150 graphics and you will see what i mean. get a new mobo with the built in graphics and an athlon 64 and your computer will be 4-5 times faster with better graphics for gaming, and for under $250-$300.

Get a new motherboard that supports AMD64. Get a Athlon64 4000+ CPU. Buy a Geforce 7600 or better. DO NOT buy an on board video card like the guy above said. You'll be disapointed. Newegg.com thats were I but my stuff. Lookin at $250-300. So theres no need to get a new Socket A mobo when your upgrading your CPU anyways. Make sure your mobo will support your ram. Socket A are not compatiable with Athlon 64 chips, but they are compataible with athlon XP CPUs. I will provide a link to some, but you are not going to find alot becuase socket A is dated technology my advice is just to upgrade to whole new motherboard maybe a AM2 board and get a new processor.
