In the 200 m medal award ceremony, two African-American athletes Tommie Smith (gold) and John Carlos (bronze) raised their black-gloved fists as a symbol of Black Power. As punishment, the International Olympic Committee banned them from the Olympic Games for life.

That was at the 1968 Olympic games. Yes, it was a spectacular and immensely controversial act, and yes, the American athletes who did it were punished by the Olympic Committee. While many of us white folks condemned the act, I thought it took a helluva lot of courage. I took heat for saying so, but I still think it was entirely appropriate and timely thing to do.
