I really want a winter white siberian(this was the kind of hamster my other one was) or a Roborovski. I dont really want to go to a breeder. I would rather go to a store.

Is there anything specific about the breeds i need to know?

Which one is better?

**I perfer hamsters over gerbils because i think they are cuter...LOL.

Petsmart carries all species of hamsters though they are still hard to find. You also need to be cautious of the winter whites that you purchase from Petsmart as they are more than likely Campbells/Winter White hybrids. It is known among breeders that if you can't trace the lines of your Winter White hamsters back to the point that they entered the US, then they are more than likely hybrids. I have seen it for myself at my local Petsmart. They were selling obvious hybrids as Winter Whites. Another Petsmart had some that looked like Winter Whites though there were Campbells in the cage with them and they were ALL being sold as Winter Whites. No wonder there's a hybridization problem.

I would strongly recommend a breeder over a pet store. Here are some breeder listings. Hopefully there's one near you:

Roborovski hamsters are not a hamster for beginners. While they rarely bite, they are not holding hamsters. Given their size and speed they can get out of ones hands very quickly. They do not enjoy being held the way other hamster species do. Many breeders liken them to tropical fish, very entertaining to watch but not for holding.

hmm.. i would go to a breeder. the chances are slim that you would find a rare hamster in a pet store.
