Why do you Americans have a totally distorted vision about italy and the italians?

Question

you say that italians are not white (i read hundreds questions about the colour of skin of italians);
you say that italians are fat and greasy, but in the reality the rate of obesity in italy is many times that in USA, and the problem of obesity in italy arrived with american fast food;
you say that the italians have got big families, when italy has the least birth rate in europe (1.25 son per family);
you think to eat really italian food, iven if you eat pseudo trash italian food;
you say that italians are violent, iven if in italy violence, omicides, predetions are many times less than in usa.
you say that italians man are macho, macho isn't neither an italian word.

WHY DON'T YOU INFORM YOURSELVES BETTER instead of justify this ignorance saying that hey are STEREOTYPES?

The more I understand United States, the more I don´t care about their distorted vision of reality. Because, hard to say it, they have a very distorted vision of the whole world, not only of italians. I´m just working with american customers and try not to see their closed-minded view of life. In other words, I´m just using them hoping they´ll become wiser in the future

This is some thing to do with what happened in ancient times.

(1) Of all lands in Europe, Italians have preserved the largest
number of ancient traditions. Opposite to this, of all lands
in Europe, the British have preserved the smallest number
of ancient traditions.

(2) The ancient language of Italy, which existed prior to
the Roman empire time is Italic. The consonants of
this word are "TLC". The ancient language of Britain
is Celt. The consonants of this word are "CLT".
Do you see the opposition - it is the reverse of the
former. They are the opponents of the former group.

(3) The one nation which cooperated least with
the Roman empire was Britain.

Americans are English people, is n't it?
All these and many more that have happened
long back are stored in the dormant memories.

Hi, I'm American, but have been living in Italy for the last 8 years. You can't blame Americans, they think Italy and Italians are a certain way because of the films/movies they watch. The same thing goes with Italians views of Americans. I've heard hundreds upon hundreds of Italians say Americans are fat, Americans only eat fast food, Americans are war-hungry, etc. Why? Because that's the image of Americans portrayed in the television. I think if people traveled more, there wouldn't be these problems, but unfortunately, it's not so.

Well, first of all, I don't think Italians are fat. And pizza is a good Italian dish that we all like. As far as violence goes, we think of movies with italians in them. For instance, the Godfather triology, and the Italian Job. I don't care if you are Italian or not, but we don't have a grudge against Italians. If you think we stereotype you guys, what do you think your question sounds like? You're just jumping to conclusions and branding us all as stereotyping nut-jobs. Personally, I don't think that's very nice.

I totally agree with danielpauldavis: american culture is extremely self-centered and xenophobic, especially after the cold war with Russia, they are TOTALLY PARANOID about foreigners, who are seen by americans as a big menace.
Plus, they are so in love with themselves: think about it: which country exposes EVERYWHERE their own flag?

you'll find american flags sticking out of anything: cars, houses, schools, supermarkets,t-shirts, gasoline stations...anywhere.

Let them believe what they want to believe, there's not much that we can do to make them change their minds anyway- they are nourished by television, and that's what they believe.
Luckily not all Americans are this way, we shouldn't generalize either, should we?

Shorten your question; why do Americans have distorted views of EVERYONE? Because in this country, I can drive 3,500 miles and still speak English. You folks in Europe KNOW that there are other cultures and languages, can't get away from them, decided to stop fighting them, and accept it. We here in the states are quite able to pretend that we are all there is. And the TV is more than willing to help us do that. Sorry. Have another helping of "Dallas."

You're complaining for little. You have no idea of how much sh*t they talk about Latin Americans. To stay in the race issue... They think that "latino" is a race, what is ridiculous to anyone that has a minimun knowledge of Latin America. A Latin American can be native american, white (iincluding people of German ascents), black and even asian, but they think we're a race.
And they also think that there is no freedom of speech in Latin America.
What can we do?

Now, it's not only the US that has stereotypical views of Latin America.
