I am just guessing, but I think it may be from the 'olden days'. The proper way of saying excuse me, begging to be pardoned... if that makes any sense!

Well, "I beg your pardon" just means "Forgive me".
It's basically a way of saying you're sorry, but you need them to repeat it.

It's an old saying... It's you saying "Sir, I'm begging your forgiveness but I didn't understand what you just said."

do you mean I beg YOUR pardon? it just sounds better and more respectful, and sophisicated that just pardon?. and a it makes you sound a but more mature in my opinion.
