Every sentence is made up of two basic parts: a subject and a predicate. The subject is basically who/what the sentence is referring to and any adjectives before the verb. The predicate is what the subject is doing in the sentence (the verb) and all of the words after it. The simple subject is who/what the sentence is about. The simple predicate is the verb by itself.

Example: The girl is very smart.
Complete Subject: The girl
Simple Subject: girl
Complete Predicate: is very smart.
Simple Predicate: is

Example: The intelligent boys went to the competition.
Complete Subject: The intelligent boys
Simple Subject: boys
Complete Predicate: went to the competition.
Simple Predicate: went

Grammar

a predicate is one of the two immediate constituents of a sentence. It is the rest of the sentence apart from the subject. For instance, in the sentence "All good things come to an end" the "come to an end" is the predicate, whereas the subject is "all good things." Strictly speaking, the simple subject is "things" and "come" is the verb; the other words modify the key terms and comprise elements of the subjective phrase and the predicate phrase.

Definition
A predicate is the portion of a clause, excluding the subject, that expresses something about the subject.

Also known as: predicator

Example
The book is on the table.

A predicate noun complets a linking verb and renames the subject. It is a complement or completer because it completes the verb. Predicat nouns complete only linking verbs. The linking verbs include the following: the helping verbs is, am, are, was, were, be, being, and been; the sense verbs look, taste smell, feel, and sound; and verbs like become, seem, appear, grow, continue, stay, and turn. The verb in a sentence having a predicat noun can always be replaced by the word equals. Ex: Mr. J. is a teacher. Mr. J. equals a teacher. Mr. J. is a father. Mr. J. equals a father. Predicate adjectives are basically the same, they describe the subject but they are located after a linking verb. Ex: The sky is blue. Sky being the subject, is being the linking verb, and blue being the predicate adjective. (You should also know that predicate nouns are also known as predicat nominatives.)

the english sentence is essentially divided into subject and predicate. Thus all the information after the subject is considered to be predicate. John kicked the ball: subject: "John"; therefore "kicked the ball' is the predicate

It is the other part of a sentence besides the subject. For example, the sentence: The dog ate my homework.
"The dog" is the subject, and "ate my homework" is the predicate.
