I just purchased a used iPod off of ebay. The previous owner has a lot of songs on it I like and would like to keep. I read the instruction booklet and it said whenever I hooked up to the computer that it would delete songs not in my iTunes library. Then it talked of a manual way to add and delete songs.
If I change the settings to "manual", will it NOT delete all of those songs? If it is on "manual" can I go in and delete the songs I don't want? Also, can I change these settings in iTunes before I even plug my iPod into the computer?
Thanks.

I think I read that you can't ever transfer songs from an iPod anywhere else, so the songs on the iPod can only be heard on the iPod.

By reading your question it seems like you know what you're doing, however I can't comment and say for sure if you can "change the settings before connecting your iPod." I think you have to have the iPod device plugged in, to get to all of the iPod controls in iTunes.

If you want to keep the songs then don't let your iPod "sync" with your iTunes. You have to put it on "Manual." You can delete the songs you don't want by going into the iPod music library in iTunes.

I'm not sure if your Itunes will ask you when you plug in the iPod if you want it to sync with your iTunes library, or if the other user's exisitng settings will take over. Sorry, hopefully someone else will know the answer to that.

I'm not sure if the manual thing works or not, I do know that when you first plug it into your computer, iTunes will say something to the affect of "this music library differs from the one on the iPod, would you like to make this the i-pods new music library?" when I said no, it wouldn't let me upload songs at all. What you can do is google search for a program called EphPod, it will allow you to copy the songs off the ipod onto your computer, allowing you to keep the songs you want.

I am pretty sure that if you set it to manual you will be able to do what you are explaining.
