Amazingly, it’s because homework is good for us. Honestly! Written homework is set because it makes us revise any information given to us, the higher the chances are that it will pass from our short-term memory [i.e. forgotten in seconds] tour long-term memory.
Homework is vital to examination success. So vital that you should immediately change your attitude to your homework. Every time a teacher forgets to give you homework, you should drag him or her back into class and demand to be set homework immediately.
1) Decide on one place to study.
2) Remove distractions.
3) Take regular breaks.
4) Prioritize your time.
5) Take notes and use them!
6) Use a study strategy.
7) Study with a partner.
8) Get plenty of sleep.
9) Set daily & weekly goals
10) Don’t procrastinate
Homework forms an essential part of effective pupil learning and therefore, it has to be given serious consideration by parents, pupil and teachers alike. Homework may take the form of learning/study as well as set written tasks.
1) It is necessary for the pupil in order to practise the skills of writing and learning.
2) It helps teachers identify mistakes and learning difficulties. It helps students to learn from their own mistakes and to identify their own difficulties.
3) Homework reinforces work done in class and assesses, for teachers and pupils alike, whether work has been understood or not.
4) Homework is necessary for exam prepartion.
1) Homework should be done at a definite, regular time each evening. As a general rule, homework should be started soon after arrival home from school and should always be finished by 9.00pm.. Students of all ages should have a day off at the weekend.
2) Homework should preferably be done on the night it is given.
3) Homework should be done asap

The government sets out what each grade level has to learn in the Curriculum. Teachers must get through this in the limited amount of time during the school year. If you look at all the curriculum documents, you would see that it is very hard to do. When the class is interupted (by students, other teachers, announcements, etc) the teacher loses this time - b/c thre is so much to include there really isn't an opportunity to go back to it. Also, alot of the time homework tells the teacher whether you understood the information you learned in class or not. This helps them guide their future lessons, to make sure everyone understand the material before moving on.
A good guide of how much homework you should have is 10 minutes for every grade level you are in. For ex. if you are in gr 5 - you could have up to 50 minutes of homework a night. Homework is suppose to be there to benefit the students (I know you don't see it that way hehe) if you find you are have to much homework, speak with your teacher and have your parents voice their concerns as well.

Its funny to read some of the answers. I can remember being a student and I hated homework but I still did it. Now I am a social studies teacher and my thoughts on homework maybe different than for other subjects like math and english. Since social studies is fact intensive, most students need to study these facts 15-20 minutes 3 times a week. In addition, I may give abook assignment to expand on the topic that we were learning about in class. Homework can be seen as a necessary evil as it is a method of enrichment as well as a method of assessment. Just remember, when you finally leave school, homework becomes just plain ol' work.

As a way of reinforcing the material learned, as well as a way to better understand the material. If teachers did not give homework, students probably would not retain as much needed information.

In-class work is a way to assess a student's short-term ability to remember what a teacher taught them. Homework and tests are a way to assess a student's long-term ability to remember what a teacher taught them. Teachers are now trying to use in-class work to gauge whether something should be retaught before giving homework (or at least this is how it SHOULD be done).

i don´t question homework itself, but the amount and quality of it.
sometimes i just leave homework just for the sake of leaving homework, especially if i am not going to take the time to see if it had any meaningful change on the student´s competence. i rather have the students practice or develop their skills while i´m monitoring them. it´s more reliable to do any assignment in class than relying on the word of the student. ( how do i know if he or she were helped and if the assignment was copied from somewhere or someone else. plus you get to enjoy by seeing how they accomplish something they thought it was too difficult or that they were not skillful enough to finish a project. you experience fist hand what he or she is able to do.

The same reason your piano, guitar, band, music teacher makes you practice... so you can get better at what you are doing!! Even in the military, soldiers are required to take apart and put together their weapons over and over and over and over again until they can do it blindfolded.... so that they will know what to do in an emergency situation. By "practicing" through homework, you get better at the subject at hand. While this might not seem important at this point... the METHOD of learning will serve you well in the future... regardless of the career you choose... so keep practicing and you will get better!!!

Trust me it is a better learning system. I am studying in Japan right now where we don'T have any homework. Yes, it is nice, but everyone has to make up for not having home work by going to cram school about twice a week for about four hours. Also, they attend cram school in the summer vacation.

It (allegedly) helps us practice concepts, helps us remember them in the 23 hours we go without that class, and ensures that we know how to do it without a teachers help.
If you were asking why they gave SO MUCH homework, I can't help you.

you know I've always wondered that.I'm 38 years old been to college. shouldn't they be able to teach you everything there at school. in college they give you student teachers. i didn't pay to have a student teacher. i agree with reading at home but not with homework. in college people stop going to class except for test cause they know that they are gonna get homework.i think home is home school is school. teacher are lazy and the wonder why they dont get paid well.
