As a child my sister got hit in the eye with a soccer ball. Her vision blacked out temporarily and when she went to the ophthalmologist she was diagnosed with internal bleeding in her eye and instructed her to stay home in a dark room, not move around a lot, and use dilation drops in the eye for three days. I was just wondering what other symptoms are and how internal bleeding of the eye is officially diagnosed and treated. THANKS!

This isn't an injury that happened recently, it was years ago. Nor am I experiencing the same problems today. I was just curious on the treatment and symptoms because I currently participate in a sport where eye injuries can occur and I want to be able to recognize it in case one of my teammates experiences it so I can let them know that they need to see a doctor immediately. Thanks!

Im not a doctor, but my guess is there was bleeding in her eye that blocked off light which is essential for us to see. The opth looked into her eye and could see this, I'm sure.

internal bleeding of the eye is commonly experienced by diabetics, and can be cauterized by lasers. it can also be a symptom of an injury such as a detached retina, which is a serious injury requiring immediate attention. it can manifest itself as a hyphema, which is basically blood in the anterior chamber of the eye (when you look into the eye, you will see the pupil swimming in blood) the blood itself is not serious because it will eventually be reabsorbed into the body, however bleeding can cause pressure to build in the eye, which can cause serious vision problems.

blood in the eye can be seen by anyone with an opthalmoscope...the best treatment is bed rest, and watching for any sort of vision loss (dark spots in field of vision) which should get immediate attention. or if bad enough the blood vessels can be cauterized with a laser. when the retina is detached, they can actually pin it back into place using tiny gold pins.

If you or someone you know has this problem, get to an eye doctor immediately, or to the ER.
