go with the gibson if you know how to play and are looking for a good guitar that sounds nice. If you are just starting off you might want to get an epiphone in case you dont like the guitar. Either way youll get a quality guitar

I have an Epiphone SG and it's a pretty good guitar for the money, however a Gibson just $400 more won't be much better than the Epiphone due to the fact that some of Gibson's cheaper models don't have the best workmanship...I bought a Les Paul double cutaway and I had to have the rough frets filed down & have the guitar set up because Gibson didn't bother to do it...I'd go with the Epiphone unless you want to spend more than $400 for a better quality Gibson SG!

Have owned both epiphone and gibson. Still have the gibsons. I advise getting the gibson name. It will give a better resale value down the road. I also like the neck/fingerboard better on the gibson. Good pickin'.

Go for the Gibson. It will have better tone and play-ability.
It will also increase in value over the years more than the Epi.
