definitely try Ross clothing stores. they have some great dresses that are real cheap. i got a prom dress for like $20! and to this day, it'll still amazingly beautiful.
another place i would try is Mariposa at the mall. im not sure where you live or if they have mariposa there but perhaps. Other stores to try are Jc Penney's, little indian/asian stores at the mall that sell lots of nice pretty dresses. and if you are short on money, try a second hand clothing store like Salvation Army, Goodwill, or Deseret Industries. But be sure to inspect second-hand clothing closely for defects in the material or zippers, because a lot of times if you buy it from there, it may have things wrong with it. hope this helps and have a good day!

Depending on where you are in the country, you should check out a Nordstrom Rack. They have all kinds of designer dresses for discount prices, and while I worked there I saw many prom-worthy dresses come through. I chose a dress there to wear to a wedding that was formal, but not very princess-y prom-y for about $25. I reccomend it if you live near one. Great prices.
Otherwise a Charlotte Rousse or Wet Seal usually have some nice dresses.
Good luck in your search and have fun at your event!
