trying to move it around will often make it jump in another direction. I think it might be a problem with my optical mouse, but I don't know.

What kinda mouse is it? Cordless, laser, ball? my mouse had same problems. If its a ball mouse clean out the ball. Laser, you'll just have to get a new one. Cordless, unplug the USB thing in and out until it acts normal again
