Shorthand is an abbreviated, symbolic writing method that improves speed of writing or brevity as compared to a normal method of writing a language. Shorthand was used more widely in the past, before the invention of recording and dictation machines. Until recently, shorthand was considered an essential part of secretarial training as well as being useful for journalists. Although the primary use of shorthand has been to record oral dictation or discourse, some systems are used for compact expression. For example, health-care professionals may use shorthand notes in medical charts and correspondence. Shorthand notes are typically temporary, intended for later transcription to longhand.

Shorthand (Pitman,Gregg or Stenographic) developed in the 1800's, is a method of writing using symbols, curves and other graphics to speed up the writing of the actual spoken word. Minute taking is usually just regular writing (unless the minute taker knows shorthand!) accompanied with a tape recorder to enhance accuracy. Minute taking may be done in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order, or according to the will of the body present.

shorthand is considered a way to take the dictation of letters memos and the such, to be able to write down the spoken word in a short - hand so that you can keep up with the speaker, and at the same time keep it accurate. minute taking is recording the content and the give and take, motions, positions stated in a meeting, either public, or corporate. there are various rules and laws on how that informataion must be recorded and then published so as to maintain open access to such proceedings, shorthand might be used to take the notes, but the minute taking rules are then used to apply what is recorded and how it is then published.

to take minutes is to take down notes relating to a meeting. the notes give a record of what happens in the meeting. a kind of minute by minute account of what people are talking about. not in exact detail, but a general picture of what is happening.
shorthand is a kind of language that reporters and note takers use. it enables you to get everything somebody is saying down on paper quickly. i think it might use small and easy to write symbols instead of words.
