I can't believe how rude people are being here. It's not a dumb question at all. and yes, it has been known to happen. Not often, but it does happen. And not all ducks fly south for the winter. Farmers keep both ducks and chickens out roaming in coops year round in every state in the country.

Generally, the ducks don't sit still on the water at night - which is when that would happen. More often than not, the duck will break through thin ice, then have trouble getting out while it's belly feathers and feet are wet and it is trying to get traction on ice near the hole. Some will drown if they can't get out. Their feathers are only so bouyant and then when their feathers get waterlogged, they start to sink - and will then drown.

I suppose if the pond was REALLY shallow and the ducks were unconsious. Usually they are moving around, which means they probably wouldn't be in a really shallow pond that long.

Larger bodies of water, like lakes or ponds, don't freeze all the way, and usually don't freeze just overnight. Because of the convection in the water, as long as the water is moving, there won't be any problem about it freezing. The water would be warmer than the air, so in theory the ducks would actually be warmer.

It's not very common. I have heard of it happening to duckilings on farms, though. Not in the middle of the pond, but near the shore.

I have also heard of ducks that drown if they can't get out of ice water in the middle of a frozen pond. I think they freeze to death first, because wet feathers won't keep them warm the way dry ones do. After they drown, the water freezes over and it looks as though the water froze while they went under water for a bit.

If the human beings you asked stay in a village that has a pond they could'nt understand lots. If the pond has some grassland the geese will hop onto it or play keep on with the chief to three bodies backyard. the place i stay is a duck pond which has an island in the middle with reeds and rushes and thats the place they stay if the pond freezes.

Ducks generally fly south for the winter. As for water freezing, it would take a long time for a lake to freeze and a healthy duck would fly away long before it froze over.

well, the duck would have to be extremely idiotic to stay in a pond of that temperature, and the other ducks would have left. unless ALL the ducks are idiots.

Ducks moniter the temp of the water through thier feet....so....they would not stay in the water overnight/when it is cold enough to freeze.

Their feathers are also water repellant [if they are in good health].
