Here in Las Vegas, individuals are disallowed to feed homeless people. The Mayor suggest that we encourage the homeless to take advantage of the many food banks and programs setup for them. As caring citizens, shouldn't we care for each other and help each other out? I think, the more we don't care about our fellow humans, the more the moral fabric of our society gets torn.

Note* If you are caught feeding the homeless, you may receive a fine by the local police.

It would be wrong if the city hadn't taken steps to help. In L.A. it's not a crime. I can't recall any programs that are in place however I am sure they exist. Help them get to the shelters and food banks and I'm sure there is probably help there to help get them off of the streets which should be the ultimate goal. As a caring citizen, help them get to the places where the most help is available.

Feeding the homeless is not wrong. I remember reading of the mayor's crackdown on the homeless in Vegas, and was very unhappy about it.
I don't know what the food banks are like in Vegas, but many of the food programs in Southern California offer only limited types of food, certain types of which many homeless people can't prepare, such as canned soups, stews, vegetables, etc. Many homeless have no access to microwave ovens, let alone a kitchen. Many of the other items are often outdated and stale. So, if it were here in the southland, I'd say the mayor's suggestion of finding a food bank or a shelter was a joke at worst, and a slap in the face to the homeless at best.

How could feeding a hungry person possibly be wrong. In every culture that we know of it has always been acceptable to help those less fortunate than we are. Would you be able to sleep at night for knowingly leaving a starving person on the street

I carry small cards with me with directions to Father Joe's Mission in Downtown San Diego and other areas; and when I can if I have any money with me, I help the person out and then ask them to look into this Mission and what they do for the homeless. But, I don't preach.

Shame...I guess that's a Mirage too. They don't want people to know there is real poverty among all this wealth...Shame, Shame on all of them. They don't pay workmen's comp, fire you at the drop of a hat and No legal redress....that's the truth in Right To Work States, they make less than the states that don't have it. Paying high rents in places too small to keep your things in and everybody is one paycheck away from homelessness! Good, glad you posted this!

Yes you can help, but as long as you dont make it a habit. Cos you see, the more you feed them and more you shelter them, the more they get LAZY to do any work on their own. So what you are doing here is MAKING THEM TO FEEL DEPENDANT ON SOMEONE ELSE FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT THEY NEED. Thus end up sitting and sleeping the streets till the END of their days.
