I would be very careful and DO NOT give your child any more than what recommended. I would go to a good health food store and ask them for the best thing to give a baby to calm them while travelling there are special "natural" products that can help with motion sickness and nervousness that over sedate like benadryl willl. There is a line of extracts call Herbs for Kids, Hyland's Homeopathics and Rescue Remedy that I have used over the years on my children for anything from illnesses, motion sickness, stress, sleeplessness that work great and don't have all the synthetic ingredients like OTC drugs like benadryl and the like have.
Good Luck,

My son's pediatrician recommended 1 mL. That's 1/5 of a teaspoon and hardly anything. But he's now 2 1/2 years old and 37 pounds and the dosage is 5 mL or 1 tsp.
Don't use the Benadryl unless you absolutely have to once you're on the plane and he or she isn't sleeping and having a hard time. I've never had to use it on a plane. If they haven't had it before, you don't know how they'll react to it. It's possible the Benadryl will completely wipe your baby out, but he/she still won't be able to sleep or get comfortable and then you will have made the situation worse because your baby will just be so much more irritable and cranky.
Bottom line: take it with you and have ready just in case, but don't use it unless you've hit rock bottom and there are no other options. Hopefully you find you don't need it.

I'm concerned that you're asking strangers (many who are teenagers) on yahoo answers instead of calling your pediatrician. I did actually do this for my 2 year old who was beastly when travelling, but consulted my pediatrician about it who gave me the ok and the proper dosage. I know my ped. would never have given the ok for a 4 1/2 month old. Giving benadryl at that age is really risky---I would just stick it out the best you can. Nurse him or give him a bottle, make sure he has a paci to suck on when taking off and landing....Besides, you don't know how your baby will react to the Benadryl. My doctor said even for a 2 year old it was a gamble---it makes some kids sleepy, but other kids crazy and wired! And that wouldn't be a fun experience on a plane. :)

As far as I know, babies are not supposed to sleep during takeoff and landing if they can stay awake. When they are awake, they will have an easier time with the pressure changes. You should also have a bottle (water spiked with a small amount of juice if it's not feeding time) ready because sucking helps the baby equalize pressure.
If you can't keep the child awake, don't worry too much about it. Sleeping while the plane is at cruising altitude is okay but shouldn't be medication-induced.

None... I just saw on the Montel Show about babies dying from be medicated. Try keeping the baby awake for a while and feeding the baby before you get on the plane. So that maybe the baby will sleep on the plane. The pacifier will help too with the ear popping.

i'm not an expert but i dont think you should give your baby any benadryl to help he/she fall a sleep. i watch this on the montel show he was talking about a lot of mothers that did that. here is a quote from the montel show. "We’ll also meet Lashawn, whose baby had been crying a lot since she was born. One day, she decided to buy some Benadryl to calm her baby. Before giving the Benadryl to her baby, she happened to see an episode of MONTEL featuring guests who had babies that died accidentally from an overdose of Benadryl! Lashawn couldn’t believe it and felt like she was meant to see that show for a reason. If it wasn’t for that show, she feels she could have accidentally killed her own baby."
the link to the montel show is below.

From my experience your little one will probably enjoy the flight. I wouldn't give him/her any benadryl because he/she could experince an adverse reaction and be awake and freaking out the whole time. There is something about taxing down the runway and that take off that would just knock my son out!!! If you still want to know the dosage your best bet is to call your doctor and have them give it to you since it is based off of weight and not age... Good Luck!!!!!

I would never suggest giving a baby meds to induce sleep. Its suggested to nurse (or bottle) the baby while taking off and landing to make it more comfortable on their ears.
I dont think you could take random people advice on the internet about a medical dosage to feed to your own child, that is something you should really be discussing with your pede.
