I believe that a mission statement is extremely important, but more important is that the company/ person believes/lives and follows the mission statement. If it is not truly believed or followed and "lived in day to day operation", it is just lip service and is worthless and just a "bunch of words". Top management sets the example and ALL decisions must follow the basic tenets of the mission statements. For example, many companies say that the customer is the most important, but then the management and employees treat them like "they are being inconvenienced". The mission statement must be imbedded into the company culture. In the same example, if there is a customer and they are not being waited on, a manager(even an executive) should take care of the customer and follow thru and provide excellent customer service. Many managers either blow off the customer or "hand them off" and say it is "not my job". In this example, it is EVERYONE's JOB and responsibility to esure customer service.

It is highly critical. The mission statement will tell you where you want to go, how you will get there, and what you will do once you get there. It's like a road map. Without one, you will be lost in no time.
