It was a profitable business endeavor and a brutal exercise of power, similar to what you see happening in Africa in present day Somalia. It is also the act of shaming and making a person more docile and subserviant if you strip them of their person. Under the 3/5ths Laws of the period, were not considered human or were 3/5ths human.
See The Books: The History of Black America by Bennett. Many times they sold their own children into slavery. Also see the History of Ida B. Wells and the Women's Suffarage Movement. Also the Black People of America by Dennis..many times these men did so and had powerless wives that were chattel that could own no property.

Because they were nothing but property. They were also impregnanted by theri masters and their milk was driken from their breasts by their masters that was meant for their newborn babies. Children were seperated from them when they got to America. Women and children were thrown off ships alive because they were considered less valueable than men and also to decrease the ship's weight. Children were sold to other mastes at the age of 6 years old. A white master would beat his slave children because they were also considered property. Once a woman arrived at her master's plantation she was stripped, whipped, and raped by her master and than forced to work in the fields from sunup to sundown. If a slave tried running away they were stripped, tied to a tree and whipped until blood ran down their backs in rivers and then given some time to heal before being put back to work. Children of slave women and their masters were thrown out of the house when their masters wanted to rape their mother and they couldn't do anything about it. They were given scraps that the family wouldn't eat no not even the dogs would eat. This was part of USA slavery. Slaves were considered property forever and did not have any rights. They weren't even considerd human beings. Of course you don't learn about all of this the true form of slaverly in American history books because they're still written by white men and black contributions don't matter. Plus no one wants to think that the USA could ever do something like that because the USA is so perfect.

Many experts say that rape is done to gain power over a person. It is very difficult to try to understand why these men felt the need to attack and degrade these women who were already being mistreated. It is really difficult to understand these acts of savagery, especially since we are not living in that time period. It may very well be that the slave owners felt they could do anything they wanted to their property. Convenience provably had something to do with it here is a woman who can not stand up her rights. It does not matter what I do to her I will not be punished
Unfortunately these types of acts continue to happen even today. There are many women who are still slaves, and continue to be raped. What ever logic people use to justify these hideous acts it is not right or fair and leave enduring scares.
