It's a fake award for the person who did the most for the quality of the human gene pool by accidentally killing themself in the stupidest way.
Like the guy who crawled under his moving pick-up truck to see if the drive shaft was working. Turns out, yes it was and his clothing got caught in it and he was torn to shreds.
Most of the Darwin awards are urban ledgends but hilarious none the less.

A Darwin Award is a semi-comical recognition for a person who illustrates the principle of natural selection through removing themselves from the gene pool (usually by death) by way of their own stupidity. Although many 'Darwin Award' tales are wholly fictional, exaggerated, or at least poorly documented; many others are true to some extent. Awards given by http://www.darwinawards.com/ are the closest thing to 'official' or 'real' Darwin Awards. The term is often used by persons not connected with the web site and AFAIK is not trademarked or copyrighted - yet.

Basically, a Darwin award is given to people who are killed doing really stupid things (i.e. climbing out on a branch overhanging a cliff and falling out of the tree). It stems from Darwin's theory of evolution and survival of the fittest. In other words, people who are too stupid to stay alive win Darwin Awards. It's actually pretty cruel.

the Darwin awards celebrate evolution in action. Like the guy that dies when he leaves the wheel of his RV to go take a nap. That's survival of the fittest in action. That guy deserves a Darwin Award.

darwin awards is a website that has been around for awhile, that basically pokes fun at people who get killed by being stupid. (removing themselves from the gene pool.)
lately, they have gotten into more urban legends, as so many of the stories they now get are acctually unverified.

Awards for truly stupid behaviour, behaviour that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the person who is so behaving deserves to be "naturally selected" out of the gene pool, preferably by means of self-inflicted accidental death (i.e. death by stupidity), before they have a chance to reproduce.
