We are writing narrative essays in my 9th grade pre-ap english class. I need help getting started. I don't know what to write about, and I'm not sure how to connect my story to something bigger. Would someone please help me out? Thank you.

This isn't hard. You probably talk like this all the time. Okay so I went out with this guy and he was a total jerk. First he did this and then he did that and then I wound up walking home in teh rain and that is why I will never go out on another blind date.
You tell what happened and then tell what you learned from it. I just saw a photo essay on the internet about some dogs and a cat being rescued from a storm and how happy and peaceful they all were to be safe together in someone's car and the person who sent it observed that humans should learn to get along as well as animals do in difficult times.
Any incident can be the basis for your essay. Include details to make it interesting and then draw a conclusion such as, There's no place like home for the holidays, Doing it right the first time will save you a lot of grief; You'll never regret the time you spent helping grandma in the garden; I will never again believe there is anything real about reality TV.
Here's a link but you won't need it. http://papyr.com/hypertextbooks/comp1/narrativ.htm
You tell stories about things that happen to you and people you know all the time. This time write it down.

I had the same problem, i had no idea how to "prove a point" with a personal story.

Think of an something you could write on, and consider what the moral or lesson you learned was. You can turn that into the thesis and conclusion. Good luck.

Spark interest, and pull people in...develop details as you move on.

Perhaps, you could start with describing a setting....

A heavy rain poured down from the midnight sky...

or a event,

"Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep the alarm sounded....

or a person,

Clarence was a tall guy....

What are the major themes in your story?
Pick one of the themes and talk about how it's developed, i.e through characteriztion, conflicts, setting etc.
