What is the maximum percentage of your yearly income that you would give to your government in order to help less fortunate people? I am asking because I wonder where the line is drawn between the government being there to allow us to acheive happiness based on the choices we make, and us existing to help government achieve its goals.
It seems to me that social programs would work so much better if we as private groups worked to help the poor(with out the government). For example, if we created a culture that really honored those who donated to the poor(instead of movie stars), we could make it very desirable for people to donate to charity. Additionally, we already see how well groups like the United Way and the Salvation Army work... why not increase the number of those groups that we give money to? Why not take back a good portion of the 27% of your income(what I pay in taxes) and decide personally which charity, social, environmental, or community group it goes to help?

Super Ruper... There are currently many people who willingly donate large sums of money to charitable institutions(Bill Gates). Why would that stop if taxes went away?
Also, when in history weren't most people one or two pay checks away from homelessness. If you think its nice to pay your taxes because it gives you a safety net, why not let me opt out of the taxes and safety net?
