if your hot water heater is tripping the reset button, you need new heating elements, its not too hot, its shorting out inside the tank. drain the tank, pull out the offending heating element, take it to a parts house with the make and modle number of your heater, a new unit should cost about $15-20, including new gaskets. make sure you put the wires back into the same screws they came from, reassemble every thing in the reverse order of dissassembly, turn on the power.. if you are uncomfortable about doing the work yourself, get a pro to do it, but you`ll be shelling out mega $$ for something you can do yourself in about an hour.

Find your model and serial number and take these to a plumbing supply store or maybe somewhere like Lowe's and they will sell you a new thermostat for your hot water heater. Just make sure that you turn the power off before you change out the thermostat. Usually the thermostat is located behind a metal plate on the side of your hot water heater.

The heater could have a bunch of sediment in it. Might be time for a new tank.

The first thing that you should do is to check that the thermostat is not turned up to high. If its not turned up to high, then you probably need a new thermostat.
