What is the difference between an *** and a donkey?

They're both a cross between a horseand another animal - does it matter which species is the male and which the female?

Unfortunately, the yahoo software changed the word "a s s" to *** because (presumably) of problems related to adult content - sorry for any confusion!

No credible cognate for donkey has yet been identified, though it is possible that it is a diminutive of dun (dull greyish-brown), a typical donkey colour; and originally, "donkey" was pronounced to rhyme with monkey.
