I'd tell myself, "deal with it" with a "hah, who cares". I have been loved all my life (not being conceited) since i got into the world of relationships, and I believe I played a big part in their lives. all of them are still single, and would probably get down on their knees to get back to me. Now lately I met my match ( i mean it as in Karma), I have waited couple years to get this going somewhere, but to no avail. I let go, because for whatever reasons, I realized, it will never happen. Right now , I am just enjoying my life as single after going through unimaginable, unrelatable, unrelayable self-made picture/imagination of a then would-be love. Luckily i came out of it. I knew I was always able to forget it.
Life is that way, it is a circle. I have my time in the sun being loved, being promised with the world, now it's my time to be ignored, unloved and ridiculed (not being negative, just being realistic.)

"do not confuse it with self-love...." I'm afraid you're the one who's confused. Of course, most everyone else is too.
The love you're talking about IS self-love. That's where romantic love it comes from (the healthy kind, not the kind where you just spend the rest of your lives blaming each other for your own flaws).
To answer your question, how I've dealt with it is to focus on self-love first, always. Then, without waiting for it, romance just wafts into my life of its own accord.
It's not easy and old habits of self-punishment die hard but it's the only way. Sooner or later everyone has to face themselves.

I believe people need companionship. If romantic love doesn't come, if you're not swept off your feet by another person, I don't think that means you can't find someone to spend your life with.
In the long run, the romance is going to fade and what you're left with is what is most important anyway.

It doesn't bother me that it hasn't come (yet) but it is something I don't dwell on. I think my friends worry about it more than I do.

if it doesn't come.. then you have to look for love. At times, it comes unannounced... at times, it requires work! lol.
