My right wheel bearing needs to be replaced. My mechanic said both, meaning left and right, should be replaced at same time. I drive a 2000 Ford Focus.

I think the bearing itself is only $30. Most places want you to but the whole thing and that's around $200 for each one.

You have a good mechanic there. The parts should run about $35 a side. Including inside and outside bearings and grease seal for each side.
The reason for replacing the bearing on both side comes from the way the car sits. If you replace one side and not the other, the newer bearing will wear out twice as fast, from carrying more weight on top of it. It is because of the engineered side to side balance of the car. Replacing both sides at the same time gives you more even wear on the bearings.

for my grand am a gm bearing was $95.00 and an aftermarket bearing was $65.00. I put the bearing in myself so I can't tell you mechanic prices for the labor but it only took me about 1/2 hr. to do it .

I agree. If one is gone, the other isn't far behind. Inner and outer, plus the seal, so parts plus labor time, around $150 at most, probably closer to $100.
