They were trying to keep the Saphira a secret for as long as possible.......not much chance of that if you just fly into town on a big blue dragon, now is there? And think what would happen to the cousin if the bad guys got hold of him........

Because if he met with Roran, Roran might be captured and tortured to see where he went. Also Brom said that he had already sent a letter to Roran explaining that he was in danger and to be wary of strangers. Eragon did not want his dragon spotted so he relented with Brom's letter.

He didn't want Roran to know about his dragon. Also, Roran had left to go somewhere, so Eragon probably couldn't have told him anyways. He also wanted to get out as fast as he could.
