It is legal.
But, it's really unethical to do it without notifying your personnel. It would only be fair to let them know that they are being tracked.
For example, when you call a business, the recorder comes on and tells you that 'this call is being recorded'... That's FAIR.
Good luck in your decision.

Don't recommend it. Transparency is always better with your employees. Nobody should have anything to hide. Good article here about it.

On a company truck/car? Not only legal, but it's becoming common practice. There are many legitimate reasons to use tracking. Taxi companies want to know where each taxi is in relation to pick-ups. Shipping companies need to know where parcels are on route. Etc.

My last job spun it this way - they are tracking the vans the employees drive, not the employees per se. That gave them the rights to do pretty much whatever they wanted, including tracking employees, and firing anyone who tampered with the equipment (to disable it).

Nope, I believe this would be a violation of the 4th ammendment for illegal search and seizure under your false pretexts. But I guess it'll be ok when the Government says that all US citizens have to be chipped with the RFID in order to live a normal life.

Routinely, employers do this very thing to employees, but usually it's when they are driving a company vehicle. A private vehicle may be a different issue. Ask your lawyer about these ramifications.

Only on your equipment on your time. Companies that send out drivers, etc., do that all the time (examples: AT&T, cable companies, etc.)
However, you may have to notify them that you have done that.
