Before you take sleeping pills you might want to try other things like warm milk. Also becuase you can't sleep at night do you feel like you need to sleep during the day. If yes just keep yourself awake during the day with caffeine until noon. Don't go to sleep or even take a nap. When it comes times for bed you should be able to sleep. If that doesn't work then I'd think about pills.

You can play around with herbs and hot milk, or tryptophan supplements, but you really should start with good sleep hygiene. That is regular sleep habits, regular exercise and regular mealtimes. Add to that a dark and quiet bedroom (with bright street lights or glowing clocks often overlooked) and some time for reflection at the end of the day to sort out stresses and you should sleep well.
If not you might add a relaxation tape, or make one yourself with a script from a book. You can even record this on your computer, and make a CD. There are many resources available at your library, even tapes and CDs can sometimes be checked out. Look under hypnosis, auto-hypnosis or relaxation.
Even the drug companies will admit that sleeping pills should be used only for a very short term.

I have the same problem... very often. I've taken a sleeping pill only a couple of times, but I really don't like to. I don't like taking pills in general, and I certainly don't want to get hooked on sleeping pills.
I'm looking for alternatives. Maybe yoga (I tried one class... haven't decided if I'll continue). I really think that reducing stress, and learning how to relax before going to sleep will help.
Good luck!

the place did your sister get the pills? purely a doctor could be certain which drowsing pill your dad needs or whether he needs one. His no longer being waiting to awaken interior the morning concerns me. Is your sister increasing the capability. All drowsing medicine is addictive, however the after outcomes grow to be much less not extra with time. If it replaced into my dad i might call for to be attentive to what he's being given, i might tell him and that i might take him to the physician and tell him what has been happening and what outcomes they have had on your dad. The physician then can inform you in the experience that your dad is advantageous or if he needs any drugs good luck

Warm milk works wonders.
Your bedroom should be clutter free, providing a more peaceful environment for resting and it would be a good idea to remove anything as distracting as a television. Try to retire at approximately the same time each night and arise at the same time because this would become a habit that your body accepts.
As I stated earlier, warm milk is great. Cold milk is good but when the milk is heated it becomes more beneficial to helping a person relax and fall asleep. I wish you well.

NO drugs!!!
You arent sleeping probbaly because you are thinking about alot of things... I understand...
Melatonin can be purchased anywhere. They are tablets that work with your body chemistry, to help you sleep. These are the same chemical your wn body uses for sleep.
Take 1or 2 Micrograms (i believe) a night at bedtime and it really does help make you sleepy.
As for the issue with your thinking all the time about stuff keeping you awake. (My guess is this is the reason)...
What helped me, is that in time as I started to learn and accept things in my life good and bad, I started to realize that that they arent all the difficult to deal with. CHange is different but is acceptable and easier than I thought.
As for thinking about what I have to do the next day, and stuff, again I started keeping a calender of things I needed to do, so I did have to worry about it and ponder it all night long.
All I can say, is just forget it all at night. Your day time is giving you plenty of hours to think about the stuff. YOur nighttime is YOUR time. You are allowed to have your time every night.
Hope that helps a little.

Go to health food store & buy an herb called "Valerian". It has a strong odor, but it's effective.
Another good product is called "Melatonin".
You can safely take both to help you sleep.

a glass of red wine before bed?
It's good for you too.
If you don't want to take 'chemicals' drugs, try melatonin (a natural ingredient available in a bottle like a vitamin that works for many people and is non habit forming.)
