if it is... then why did unions ever form in the first place? or OSHA?

they weren't there in the beginning and if they weren't needed, they would have never been formed?

I didn't assume, I asked "why did they form"... you're assuming I assumed...

there may be a perfectly good reason besides need?

if it is in "his/her best interests to treat the employee fairly"... then why are there HUGE amounts of reports of businesses not treating their employees fairly in almost every nation that have no business regulation?

from China, to Taiwan, to Hong Kong, to Vietnam, to Brazil, to Haiti and Mexico and on and on...

in fact, I don't know of a country that doesn't have any regulations (or has few regulations) that doesn't have problems?

it should at least work somewhere?

No, they're not. Don't have to look far to see what happens when they don't follow rules ----> Enron, Worldcom, etc. Ruined lives.

Businesses only survive when there's profit. Profit is good, but most companies cannot be relied upon to protect their workers AND make a profit. Some companies go above and beyond the OSHA requirements on their own accord, but usually only do that after seeing that their profits go up when their workers' comp rates go down.

OSHA laws came into effect after decades of companies causing injury to workers without worker protection.

That's a strange view. Unions formed because they felt that only government was capable of regulating businesses, that the companies weren't independent or strong enough to do it themselves. Another reason was that they were lazy and didn't feel like fixing up their own lives, so they had someone else do it for them. Government getting tangled up in private affairs is a very bad thing, because rules will often change based on the whims of the politicians or on their status in elections. Businesses know best how they run, and thus are better at taking care of themselves.

Don't ask a question if you've already decided which answer you're looking for.

Yes, for the most part the marketplace take care of shoddy producers of goods and services. Regulation of basic work safety, and conditions that is common sense you dont want people dying on the jobsite that hurts shareholders profits. The goverment always have and always will regulate business.

Unions formed because of long hours, low pay, harderouz working conditions. Union in the 21st century are outdated for most sectors of the economy, and paying union dues so the union leaders blow union dues at the casino doesnt benefit workers. Union are a outdate relice of the past to help out workers, and its society duty to help each other out, and not the business itself.

Responsible corporations exist without the need for or desire for unions. Yes, they were necessary at one time. Personally, I believe that they are now detrimental to business and employees alike.

A capitalist has an idea...he runs with it, invests money and hires people. He creates a product or service and employment in a community. If he wants his company and business to thrive...it is in his/her best interests to treat the employee fairly and set his goods at a fair price. What right, then, does someone have to come along and basically kidnap his business and hold it for ransom...as happens with unions every day. Many companies...mostly unreported, choose to close their doors rather than face this kind of thievery.

No, this is coming from a free market conservative. Unions were needed because businesses did not do the right thing. Over time, the whole thing got way out of control.

Needed when started, basically useless now

Well first of all, the assumption that things that arn't needed don't happen, is flawed.
Secondly, they were needed, researching the working conditions during the time of any country's Industrial revolution will show how horrible they were. People who missed a day of work were instantly fired, low pay, no benefits, etc.
