My brother is having trouble with his car and I'm hoping someone can help me out. His car is both manual and automatic-?? (there is a button on his shifter to switch it) his car wont shift into reverse or drive, it's like it's stuck in neutral, and there is a light on the dash that comes on and blinks that says "manual shift", but we tried pushing the button on his shifter to see if it would switch back, but it doesn't do anything, does anyone know the problem? thx in advance.

I used to have a '91 Probe - I don't know what model yours is, but I doubt they're all that different. This problem sounds familiar...

The "Manual Shift" button lets you hold the selected gear - "1" means only first gear, "2" means only second gear, even when starting from a complete stop. "D" means only third gear, even when starting from a complete stop (this is great for driving in snow, because of the lower torque at the wheels from starting in third.) Overdrive is not available in manual shift mode. The button should be: push once to turn on, push again to turn off.

As for being stuck in neutral, make sure the key is in the ignition, the ignition is on (although is doesn't have to actually be running) and the brake pedal is depressed. Now try shifting. If this doesn't work, there is a small button on the console next to the shifter - I think its labeled "Shift Lock" - try pushing or sliding that while shifting (with the ignition still on, etc.)

Hope this helps - email me if you need more info.
Good luck!

I run a restoration save (hehe) and you have a foul grasp grasp cylinder my freind. the cups or seals or permitting the stress to pass back to the resrvoir which will make the grasp pedal follow the floor. its an outstanding concept to replace the slave cylinder on the comparable time yet in case you haven't any longer been loseing fluid and you elect to do it at the cheap, merely replace the grasp.
