Looks like you're a baseball fan---try "Catcher in the Wry" by Bob Uecker.
Any Robert B. Parker book in the "Spenser" series would be good---he's a tough, smart-azz PI.

"Captives" by Linda Colley. It provides a historical analysis of the themes and symbols that British captives in foreign countries during the 18th century produced in creating British identity and empire. Fascinating!
