Dell locks the computer so you can't OverClock it. The only dell you can over clock is the Dell XPS.

This is a general overview. If you want more detailed specifics go to www.tomshardware.com.

You would have to run your P4 chip on a motherboard that allows you to manipulate the settings. Most PC's made by Dell, Gateway, IBM, E-Machines, etc. have fixed settings hard coded on the motherboard so that it cannot be changed.

Typically when the chip goes into the motherboard, all it knows is that its a P4 chip but it does not know how fast it is supposed to go. The expectation is that you will enter the information according to the manufacturer's specs, however, people can and do put in faster numbers.

Because you would be putting greater demands on the processor than it was designed to accomplish, the chip will become hotter than normal which would require the use of a bigger heat sink and a bigger fan on top of the chip to keep it cool.

Overclocking seldom works the first time so you will have to keep tweaking the settings until you can get it going as fast as it will go without it crashing.

You have to do it in your system Bios...if I remember correctly. But if you do..Only do it by 10% sometimes the CPU chip-set can actually run cooler this way. But if you do it wrong...and WAY OC your CPU. and don't compensate for the extra heat being produced. You will melt you CPU and motherboard and cause more damage than what it's worth. Also. I've read a report saying that Intel is making there P4 systems UN-oc able. (if that makes sense.) That's why you are starting to see a lot of people going for the AMD and the Celeron. It was discovered that some computer stores where taking the computers and Over Clocking the CPU then charging a higher price for them.
