The traditional rock band has guitar(s), bass, drums and occasionally keyboards, but really you should not feel limited to that format. There are countless numbers of combinations of instruments that you could use in a band. Your band will be more unique if you stray from the traditional formula. You need drums and bass to provide the backbone for your band but beyond that I would encourage you to be creative. Accordions and mandolins, for example, are very underutilized in contemporary music.

bass, guitar, drums and lead singer. You may have 2 guitars besides the bass, as long as it rocks without distorting!!
