I don't think the childbirth part is the reason so many women don't want kids anymore. If that is the only reason withholding a woman from having kids, it's really pathetic. I think a more common reason so many women aren't having kids, is cause they haven't found a suitable partner in time.

First, I want to be in a marriage with a man who's open to children. So many men too are choosing not to have children (or get married).

Second, I lost hope for a period in my life. Without hope, there is no need of bringing love into the world. Media like news, TV shows, movies make the future look bleak with war, disease, objectivity, and crime. I'm now full of hope, and the outlooks getting better. I've stopped watching the evening news, cutting down on Entertainment Tonight, and finding people who have happy, positive changes in the world to share (Oprah, PBS, Discovery Channel, Joel Olsten, and going to Mass).

Third, Public School made "Sexual Education" horrifying. I was taught that my sexuality was to be "Medicated" because it was a "Disease". Certainly, the agenda to prevent teen pregnancy worked --- and stayed with me keeping me thinking, "No Pregnancy" (please) way into my adult life. The video's and charts about sexuality and child birth were as horrifying as the "Mothers Against Drunk Driving" video's and the "Lungs" from smokers. I'm wondering WTF they taught boys in Sex Ed --- 'cas they're more freaked than most of us girls. Honestly, having a baby is still spooky, and I need a real secure man (or at least a strong confident role model).

I may never have kids (time will tell), but I've gotten away from the "Never" attitude I once had.

I honestly don't know the answer to this one, but I can tell you without any doubt at all that there's a hell of a lot more to childbirth than just "the pain"...I have 6 kids. The pain IS quite unbearable at times, but thanks to *wonderful* medical technology, you can have the pain taken away. I also have to agree with one of the other responders: I'd take labor pain over fighting with my 17-year old daughter who thinks I was born yesterday in a heartbeat!
If I ever came across someone who said they were not having children because they fear childbirth, I'd have to sit with them and dig a little deeper...I highly doubt that's the only reason. Love and peace to you.

I chose not to have kids, but not because I am afraid of labor. I simply do not like kids, and I am definitely glad that society has given me the option to have a life and a career without being condemned for not havind children.

Giving birth is the easy part. Try dealing with a 14 year old who talks back all the time and thinks he knows everything. I'll take labor pains any day. :-)

I think that a lot of women today are more career oriented and dont' want or feel like they need the responsibility of having children and raising them correctly. Cost is also something to think about when having children...and this responsibility does not go away...once you have children, your stuck with them forever.

That is not true. OB/GYN has a very modern pain free alternative to natural child-birth. They just need to educate themselves on the subject.
