My friend has been seperated from his wife for over 4 years. He lives in Maine and she lived in North Carolina last he knew, but he can't find her now. How would one go about doing a divorce without knowing where she is. He needs some of her personal information to even file for divorce like her SS#, current address, etc.

It is hard to believe that the husband doesn't know the ss#, which is vital in tracking down someone. The separation paper or her lawyer should have the ss# in order to divide properties.

One can go to the local police to trigger a request for assistance to the police jurisdication of the last known address.

Although I think your divorce lawyer can do this, he will charge you big dollars for this work. So you may wish to find a reason to seek help from your local police first before you start a divorce proceeding.

I live in Washington but I have a friend going through a similar situation. If he files papers there is a time frame for her to respond. If she doesn't he can change it form divorce to legal abandoment ant ultimately legal separation. All ties will be cut and she can't come back and try to get anything out of him. good luck to your friend.
