Over the years i have noticed that nba players reach out to their community but after they retire they are never heard of or seen doing things for their community are they faking it.

Some are just doing it to look good (Isiah Thomas wouldn't do anything without a camera documenting; no joke). Perhaps it's because there are the players that are still playing and all the media is focused on them. I'm sure some former players still help out.

LOL, the NBA Cares thing is all because of the Palace Brawl. That fight tainted the leagues image, all those commercials showing players doing community service and what not are forced on by the league, but, some players are genuinely good people and do these things out of kindness. While alot of them let the fame and money get to them, a rare few don't forget their roots and stay humble.

I think that they are real, but somebody else probably pushed these players to do it.

NBA players are like a brand. They have agents and people working for them to increase their positive publicity. Just like celebrities, politicians, and anyone else who is famous. Positive press is good because they will make more money as they increase in popularity and public appeal. The more the players make, the more their agents and public relations team makes who frame their clients as respectable people to increase the players' name brand. The league itself (NBA) also hires people to make players look like caring citizens, just to boost the league's appeal. (I'm sure you've seen the commercials.)

Corporations do this as well. They sponsor many community events, as I bet you've personally seen another corporation's logo at some sort of event you attended. Corporations, just like the NBA, just like the NBA players and their agents, etc do this as a sign of goodwill and advertising that will ultimately lead to more money or better sustainability.

It's quite possible that retired players still give to the community, but they do this out of the kindness of their hearts (or for tax incentives) and they no longer need or have agents, public relations people, etc to let the world know about it.

You've got to remember that a lot of these guys came from poverty, so some understand strife and remember to give back to the community. Some of the players are just geniunely good people.

give some examples...many retired players who have been on my local team are still very involved with the community doing charity functions and have foundations that raise money..maybe not being from an nba town you dont see these examples.. we get plenty of radio play from our sports radio station, interviewing players from different citys and states about the things they do....you are way off with your comments...

maybe some just go along with it because they have to but there are also those others like dikembe mutumbo who is truly giving in nature. when most players retire, i think they just want to step way from the light because most want to take care of their family in private. unless you are a huge superstar like MJ or sir charles then people generally just forget about the player as a person.

I think the league pushes it with their "NBA Cares" program, but I always question just how 'into it' the players really are.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to become known. However, there are a few that do continue to give after they retire, you just don't hear about them unless they are legends like MJ.
