Maybe the "special varsity practice" was just a whole bunch of running. It might be for people who need it the most. Your coach might think you are being cocky and overconfident if you ask why you didn't get a letter. So, it might not be best to press him about it. But, make sure you try and play hard like usual during regular practices, and don't be jealous or mad, and he might notice how well youhandle things, and your sportmanship, and reconsider his decision. You can ask him how you can improve to make varsity next year, just don't overdo it. Keep playing and trying, and don't worry anout it too much.

Your coach has his reasons. Perhaps your teammate is younger and he is trying to "build for the future". Perhaps your teammate plays a position that is weak for the varsity team. Perhaps your team mate just needs to be "challenged" to bring him down a peg or two. Playing with varsity can sometimes provide a very quick "attitude readjustment". Don't try to 2nd guess your coach. There could be many reasons why he was included in this practice. Some are because he's a good player and some because he's weak.

Keep trying. When Michael Jordan was a sophomore in high school, his friend made the varsity basketball team and MJ didn't. But Michael kept on playing. And look what happened. Here's a quote from Michael Jordan: "Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."

Maybe he has a reason for chosing certain people.
Ask the coach to give his reason. Maybe the player have some weakness that he want them to improve on. If he is beating around the bush, it most likely not fair.
when you play games are you sitting on the side line or an active part of the game.

since you are confused, you should probably talk to your coach about the situation and ask him what he does not see in you.
