I don't know why but it is SOO hard for me to understand the lunar calendar. My husband knows it very well and when the new moons and the full moons are and everything. Then he knows how the seasons line back up and what day the celebrations are! I am so glad I have him because I would be really lost without him! Does anyone else have trouble sometimes with it?

The lunar calendar is based on the phases of the moon. Different cultures that base their belief systems on the lunar calendar often call out dates in lunar months for special worship or notice.

It can be confusing to think of the lunar calendar in terms of the calendar used commonly across cultures, so it's best to think of them separately, and then sync up dates when you need to.

For example, imagine you're standing outside a circle of dancers. You want to join in. Do you look for the beginning or end of the circle? Probably not because you probably can't find a beginning or end. So if you wanted to join that circle of dancers, you'd just jump in somewhere. You'd be welcomed into the circle, you'd join hands, and begin dancing around the circle with them.

That's the way the Lunar calendar is. There's no beginning or end, there are only phases and seasons. The lunar calendar represents the circle of life. If your faith has important lunar dates for worship, like Ramadan or Yom Kippur, you would want to know when in the lunar calendar that event should fall. When you jump into the lunar calendar, notice where you are in the circle of life, and notice where those events are in the circle of life. It might be that you find it easier than you expected.

But don't try to keep all the lunar calendar days lined up with the Julian calendar. They don't stay in sync.

Honor your culture and heritage and try to learn about the lunar calendar.

Every 28 days is a new or full moon. It will differ from the current calender we're using. For instace, in Islam, the years are based on the Lunar Calender instead of the Solar Calender (which is 365.25 days long). So a lunar year is "shorter" than a solar year.
