I recommend starting with something small, so that you can finish it in a reasonable amount time. You don't want to start a big project and get discouraged by how long it is taking and quit. I would try a scarf, because it is pretty quick and can have very satisfying results. If you get a couple of skeins of interesting yarn, you can just knit back and forth. The number of stitches depends on how thick the yarn is, but I usually do about 14. If you want something even smaller, for an even quicker project, try a potholder. I agree with 'knittinmama' that lionbrand.com is a good place for free patterns.

I have just learned to knit and I am making a throw that requires me to cast on 111 stiches.
First row: knit three and pearl three knit 3,pearl3, across the row should end with 3 knit stitches.
Second row: pearl 3, knit 3, pearl 3, knit 3, across the row ending with 3 pearl stitches.
Repeat these two rows until the desired length is reached.
I am using a size 13 us needle and #4 red heart yarn. It will take me about 6 to 8 skeins of the super saver skeins.
This pattern is really easy and basic to do. It uses basic stitches and straight needles.

Try checking out some websites such as lionbrand.com. They have a good library of free patterns based on your skill level. They also have them divided by clothing, accessories, household items, etc.

I've been knitting for many years and would like to eventually stop my daytime job and sell my knitting creations. Once you get really good, you may want to check out some really fun sites such as White Lies Designs. You may also investigate any of the knitting magazines, I like Knit.1 published by Vogue and the magazines published by interweave press.

Enjoy your new hobby!
