Silicon Dioxide is formed when oxygen hits silicon (chemical reaction). Found mostly in the top layers of the crust.

Silicon Dioxide is a crystal (silica). It is what makes up sand and also occurs in other crystalline forms some of which are quartz, chalcedony, opal, amethyst, agate, rock crystal, flint, and jasper.

The symbol for Silicon Dioxide is SiO2 (small 2) -- where oxygen binds with silicon, causing a chemical reaction.

Silica is present in many other materials, in different forms.
