Central Air furnaces tend to dry the air out. The low humidity makes the home susceptible to static electricity build-up. There are a couple of good options to prevent this.

1. Get a small portable humidifier, and run it frequently in your home. Cheap upfront cost, but uses a lot of electricity over time, and must be filled with water on a regular basis.

2. Have an HVAC expert attach a Furnace Humidifier to your central air system (you can try to install it yourself if you're handy). I believe that they run somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 or so depending on your area, so it's more upfront, but you don't have to worry about daily maintenance.

Install a humidifier. You need to get moisture back into the air. We used to put pans of water inside of the heating vents. They need to be refilled daily, but that's a small price to pay to keep from itching all over!!

Carpet usually creates static, especially if you wear socks or slippers on it. Besides, its wintertime and very dry.
